The project Enjoy reading demonstrates that young people read with pleasure and that this improves their reading skills, thereby reducing inequality of opportunity among young people. After a search by Yvonne van Schie among enthusiastic schools, the Haarlem College joined, and the project was developed collaboratively with activities that suited the pupils, the project objectives, and the school. From the Haarlem College, Dutch teacher Laura Bins was the driving force.
The assignment for the pupils was to read a book, as is often the case in school, but instead of the usual class assignment, a podcast was made about these books. To prepare them, the pupils first went on an inspiring guided tour, including through the historical library of Teylers Museum. The pupils were particularly impressed by the richly decorated Pieter Teylers House.
The pupils may add the podcast to their portfolio; this counts as a full assignment for their Dutch mark, thanks to Dutch teacher Laura Bins.
