40% students must be selected by lottery

In some regions or at specific schools, a lottery system is used due to the high number of applications. On average, one in six children in the Netherlands is subject to a lottery when applying for a secondary school place. In the cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague, this figure stands at 40% of children. Pupils from the major cities are increasingly looking for a secondary school outside their own region.

Good connection to Amsterdam

Directly situated on Schipholweg, Haarlem College is easily accessible from Amsterdam-West by train and a direct bus connection. Furthermore, in recent years, no selection/lottery process was necessary and all children who registered could simply be placed. ‘A pleasant and secure feeling for both parent(s)/carer(s) and child, knowing that you will be placed.’ Aldus Scheerder. ‘A different situation than in many schools in Amsterdam.’

Learning in an inspiring environment

The Haarlem College is a school for pupils with recommendations for havo, vmbo-theoretical (mavo), vmbo-kader, and vmbo-basis. We are located in a modern school building with our own gymnasiums, a fully professional theatre, and a state-of-the-art Techlab. ‘You follow your lessons in an inspiring environment and all the ingredients are present for you to showcase your talents. We really see children come alive here and discover what they are good at during their time here.’ Thus Director Viola Scheerder.

Would you like to register at Haarlem College?

New: HAVO at Haarlem College

In addition to basic, kader, and vmbo-t (mavo) education, we will also be offering havo from the 2024-2025 academic year at Haarlem College. The havo stream at Haarlem College stands out through its balance of thinking and doing. By incorporating a practical component alongside theory, we maintain high motivation levels and keep students engaged.
